編集者、奥原麻衣子がニューヨークへ行くと聞き、向こうで活動する写真家ジミ フランクリンと連絡をとった。
彼らの自然な時間の中で身につけるsemohのシャツ。
奥原の手記とともに、ジミの撮った”そこにあるもの ”を感じてもらいたい。
I recently contacted Jimi Franklin the photographer, when my friend and editor Maiko Okuhara said she will be in New York. Semoh shirts worn by them in their own time- I hope you can feel "what is there" through Jimi's photographs together with text by Okuhara.
ニューヨークへ。
長時間のフライト、変化する環境、緊張感のある数日間が待っている。
世界中から最先端のカルチャーが最速で集まってくる街。
短期間の滞在でも、凝縮した刺激いっぱいの日々を送ることができる魅力は相変わらずだ。
Off to New York City.
Long flight, change of scenery and an intense few days await.
The city where the newest of the new cultures gather from all of the world in the fastest pace.
It never fails to give me days condensed with exciting moments, even when it's a short stay.
時間通りに来ないメトロ。
どこもかしこも渋滞して進まないタクシー。
タイムロスしたくないし、移動の時間も快適に過ごしたい。
だから好きな音楽と本は欠かせない。
街に合わせる必要はない。なんでもいい。自分の好きなもので。
縮尺を自分に合わせるだけで、また新しい発見があるのも
この街の好きなところ。
Metro is never on time.
Taxis get stuck in traffic everywhere.
Don't wanna lose my time, wanna spend my moving time in the best way possible.
So I always have my favourite music and books.
Don’t need to fit into the city.
It could be anything, whatever I like.
The city lets you discover new things if you focus on yourself,
that’s another thing I love about this place.
移り変わりの激しいニューヨークの中にも、
10年前と変わらず同じ空気が流れている場所がいくつかある。
イーストヴィレッジは、そんなエリアの一つ。
レストランやバー、コーヒースタンドなど
食が充実し、ヴィンテージショップも多い。
最近は新進気鋭のアーティストたちがこぞって集まり、
ギャラリーやスタジオも増えている。
Even in ever-changing New York City,
someplace stays the same from 10 years ago.
East Village is one of them.
The richly cultured area with many restaurants and coffee shops, and some vintage shops too.
In recent years this place became home to many upcoming artists, getting filled up with galleries and artist studios.
今回モデルを務めたのは、
イーストヴィレッジに拠点を置くフォトグラファーのBrendan。
彼の家に集まるKenyettie、とガールフレンドのNaren。
Brendenの部屋で過ごす３人の空気感は心地よく、自然体で自由だ。
誰もが、いつでも、好きなときに好きなことができる。
そう、ニューヨークで暮らす人たちに共通して言えるのは、
自由でありながら己がしっかりとあること。
その場の雰囲気や人に流されない、強さがあること。
心が粉々に砕かれた寂しい夜に、駆けつけて一緒に過ごしてくれる人がいる。
最高に幸せでハッピーな瞬間を共有できる仲間がいる。
同じ目標に向かって頑張れるチームがある。
この広い世界の中で、自分たちのインディペンデントな居場所を確保したいという欲求に支えられている。
それがニューヨーク的。なのかもしれない。
The model for this shoot is Brendan, a photographer based in East Village, his friend Kenyettie and girlfriend Naren.
The atmosphere surrounding the three, hanging out in Brenden’s apartment is relaxed and free.
Anyone can do what they want when they want.
The common ground of the people in New York City is that
they are all free yet has a strong sense of self.
They all have the strength to not get themselves swayed by anyone or anything.
A person who rushes to spend the lonely evening after your heart gets shattered.
Friends to spend the happiest of happy moments.
Team members with the same goal.
The desire to have this place of independence to call their own within the big world,
holds this place together.
That is New York. Perhaps.
Make it＝作り出す。成し遂げる。
何かを作り出しながら、自分の居場所を築こうとする。
ニューヨークと東京で共通するのは、きっとそういうところ。
世界一のコンクリートジャングルに、命を吹き込むのは、
そこに暮らす人々と彼らが織りなす文化。
涼しく過ごしやすい秋がすぎたら
もうすぐニューヨークに冬がやってくる。
Making=Creating. Completing.
Trying to find the place to call your own, while creating something.
That is the similarity between New York City and Tokyo.
What brings some soul into the world's largest concrete jungle is the culture made by the people living in the city and the people themselves.
When the cool, pleasant autumn leaves,
comes winter, in New York City.
